Introduction

Contact lenses can help you see the world in a whole new way. They don’t just improve your vision - they also boost your confidence and give you a cleaner, more natural look. Unlike glasses, contact lenses give you a full 180-degree view, so you can see everything around you clearly, without any frames getting in the way.

What is a Contact Lens?

Contact lenses are tiny, soft lenses that you wear right on your eyes to help you see clearly—just like glasses, but without the frames! They’re great for people who have eye power ,want to have coloured eyes and more natural look without wearing specs all the time.

You simply place the lens directly on your eye, and have a—clear vision! But remember, wearing contacts needs a little care. You have to follow a proper routine: keep them clean, wash your hands before touching them, and never sleep in them unless your doctor says it's okay. Good hygiene is super important to keep your eyes healthy and happy.

How to Wear Contact Lenses?

The first wear may be difficult, but the longer you wear them, the easier it’ll become to wear it again. Here are the basic instructions to be followed. .

1. Wash And Rinse Your Hands Thoroughly

The first step to be followed. Choose an eye to start with. And it is always better to start with the same eye every time to avoid mixing up your lenses or name the lens on the box.

2. Rub The Lens Gently In A "+" (Plus) Shape

Place the lens in your palm, add a few drops of contact lens solution, and gently rub it with your fingertip in a plus shape. This helps remove dirt and germs.

3. Check the Lens

Place the lens on your index finger and check if it’s inverted (inside out). An inverted lens will have edges that flare out. In the correct position, the lens edges should appear almost straight or turn in.

4. Hold Your Upper Eyelids

Hold your upper lid with the opposite hand that is holding the lens. Secure your lower lid with the middle finger of the hand holding the lens.

5. Bring The Lens Closer To The Eye

Very slowly bring the lens toward your eye while looking “through” the lens and finger. Gently place the lens on your cornea. Ensure you don’t blink until the lens is placed on the cornea.

6. Release Your Eyelids

Release your upper and lower lid slowly and blink a few times. Check if you can rotate your eye in all direction and blink slowly for tear flow. Once done check it in the mirror

Follow the same steps for the other eye.

Benefits of Wearing Contact Lenses

Complete Vision

With regular eyeglasses, you get clear vision in front of you—but the sides (your peripheral vision) are often blocked by the frame. This can be a problem, especially when you're driving, playing sports, or doing anything where you need to see all around you.

That’s where contact lenses come in! They sit right on your eyes, giving you a full, clear 180-degree view—left, right, and everywhere in between. No more turning your head all the time just to see clearly.

Plus, contact lenses are super stylish! They're invisible, so you can show off your natural face without frames. And for special occasions or festivals, you can even get coloured lenses to match your mood or outfit—fun and fashionable!

Don't Fog Up

Your eyeglasses may fog up in certain weather conditions or when you come out of an airconditioned room or car. The fog formed gives a blurred vision, but in a contact lens you will never find this problem.

Convenience

The most important benefit of wearing contact lenses is that they are easy to use and they can adapt in different environments without much effort. Though eyeglasses are equally easy to wear, it becomes a burden on your nose after a while and an obstruction while playing a sport or dancing. Contact lenses are so light,  after a while you may also forget that you are wearing a lens.

No Glare

When you wear your specs, you are sure to get blinded by the glare of the sun’s rays or the headlights of the car coming from the opposite direction bouncing off your glasses. And here comes the contact lenses to save you by not creating any reflections of any kind of sharp light. This is because the lenses sit on your eyes and not in front of them, and thus zero glare.

For Complex Prescriptions

When your eyeglass prescription is quite high, the thickness of the glasses also increases. Whereas in contact lens there is no such issue. Contact lenses are a boon for people with more complex prescriptions. And in case you have any of the following problems, like

  • Farsightedness (hyperopia or hypermetropia)

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)

  • Astigmatism

  • Difficulty seeing near objects (presbyopia)

Contact lenses are perfect for each one of the problems. In fact, new technologies allow people with unique vision issues to also wear contact lenses and it can also correct the refractive errors better than glasses.

Increases your Confidence

Yet there are people who are not very confident to carry eyeglasses on formal attires in a formal function or a meeting. They become too conscious and feel they ain't looking beautiful or smart. Contact lens removes all these hesitation and increases your self confidence and elevates your look as well.

Easy to Maintain

A contact lens is far easier to maintain than a prescription eyeglass.

With the reusable pair of lenses, clean and store them every night. It’s an easy process and just requires the use of your lens solution - hardly a five minutes process.

And in case you are using disposable ones, it’s just a 2 minutes process.

During the day, your tears and blinking take care of any dirt or debris of the contact lens.

With glasses, you have to clean away smudges and dirt several times a day with a special cloth. And if it rains, it’s another huge task to manage.

Types of Lenses

Soft Lenses

Soft contact lenses are the most commonly used type of lenses. They’re made from soft, flexible plastic that allows oxygen to pass through to your eyes, keeping them comfortable and healthy.

These lenses are super comfortable and easy to get used to, which is why many people prefer them—especially first-time wearers. They’re great for daily use and come in different types, like daily disposables, monthly lenses, and even coloured ones.

However, because they are soft and thin, they are also very delicate. They can tear or rip easily if you’re not gentle while handling them.

Also, soft lenses absorb water and liquids, including things like soap, lotion, or even tap water. That’s why it’s really important to wash and dry your hands properly before touching your lenses, and only use the recommended lens solution to clean or store them.

Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) Lenses

Also known as "hard lenses," they are made with silicone polymers. It's a durable material and allows oxygen to pass through the cornea. Though it takes a few weeks to adjust yet it keeps the shape better than soft lenses.  These lenses are also used as treatment lenses for keratoconus.

Speciality Lenses

This includes scleral lenses (which vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera) and Ortho-K lenses (which reshape the cornea while you sleep). Theses lenses are generally not preferred, but in the corneal ulcer or corneal damage patients, such lenses are often prescribed.

Few specialised Lenses

Hybrid Lenses

These lenses combine the comfort of soft lenses with the sharper vision of RGP lenses, featuring a soft skirt and a rigid center. This type of lens is suitable for people who have irregularly shaped corneas due to corneal ectasia or other conditions.

Toric Contact Lenses

Toric lenses are special lenses for people with astigmatism. They’re made from the same material as other contacts and come in soft or RGP forms. Like bifocal glasses, toric lenses have two powers. One corrects astigmatism, and the other for myopia or hyperopia.

Cosmetic Contact Lenses

When you want to look a little different from your usual look, a Cosmetic lens can change the appearance of your eyes. Sometimes the cosmetic lens looks very similar to animals’ eyes too. It is just worn for fun or to elevate the look. These kinds of lenses also require proper care. They can be bought without prescriptions from retail outlets.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) Lenses

These are specialised contact lenses that helps to correct myopia for the day.

Choosing the right type of contact lens depends on individual needs, lifestyle, and the recommendations of an eye care professional.
